The Most Typical Wines of Liguria

Liguria Wines

Land of nature, culture, and traditions, Liguria is home to some of the most renowned wines in Italy. Typical Ligurian wines are distinguished by the unique characteristics of their terroir.

Viticulture in Liguria has been a flourishing art since the time of the Greeks, further refined by the Romans and during the medieval era. Characterized by steep slopes and elevations, the Ligurian terrain features picturesque vineyards overlooking the sea and small terraces with stone walls. This instantly recognizable landscape characterizes much of the Cinque Terre, where the rare Sciacchetrà is produced

These vineyards are constantly exposed to the sea breeze, which imparts the grapes with a distinctive salinity not found elsewhere. This viticulture is defined as “heroic,” where the harvest is done strictly by hand, with the grapes transported on the shoulders: a nuance that makes the wine bottles even more fascinating and significant at the end of the process.

By definition, Ligurian wines include Vermentino, white grape vines, but many other varieties coexist, such as Pigato and Albarola. Ligurian wines are fresh and aromatic, but Liguria also offers red wines of great character, such as Rossese di Dolceacqua and Ormeasco.
