Let’s begin our journey through the Cinque Terre by discovering what to see in the fascinating Monterosso, an ancient seaside village that offers ideas and landmarks for anyone.
Monterosso is the largest town in the Cinque Terre, and is the only one to have a wide sandy beach surrounded by a promenade that winds through shops, clubs and ice cream parlors. These characteristics make it one of the most interesting destinations to see in Liguria, a context free from the roughness of the territory present in the surrounding villages.
In the center of Monterosso beach there is the famous rock stretching out towards the sea, an immediately recognizable image that adorns all postcards and representations of this land. The sandy stretch of Fegina has crystal clear waters and is home to private bathing establishments and free stretches, to intercept stratified tourism.
The first place you come across when coming from Genoa, and therefore the closest to Sestri Levante, Monterosso is made up of an ancient part and a more modern part, connected together by a tunnel. In the older area you will find the colorful tower houses, the alleys and all those typical views of the urban centers on the Ligurian sea.
In addition to the natural beauty, there are many artistic testimonies to see in Monterosso: the Church of San Giovanni Battista is a refined example of Genoese Gothic dating back to the mid-13th century. The curious statue of the Giant is worth your visit, a Neptune overlooking the waves composed by the sculptor Minerbi in the early twentieth century. Finally, we remember the Aurora Castle and Tower, one of the typical panoramic fortifications with defensive purposes.
