A sculpture on the sea of Portobello Bay

When art harmonizes with the wonders of nature, unique and fascinating suggestions are created. Sculptor Leonardo Lustig has enhanced the beautiful setting of Portobello Bay in Sestri Levante with his interpretation of the fisherman’s profession.

On the rocks of the Bay you will be able to glimpse a bronze profile, bent over the sea surface, intent on casting his net through the waters while waiting to bring his catch to shore: a “Pescatorello”(literally “little fisherman”). A tribute by artist Leonardo Lustig to one of the most representative trades of the Ligurian Riviera: the tradition of fishing, the silences of the sea, and the solitude of a slender figure, concentrated and proud, as he observes an indefinite point in front of him.

The harmonious simplicity of Lustig’s sculpture casts new shades on Portobello Bay by establishing a complex interplay of references that reaches even to the world of fairy tales, with the great legacy that a writer like Andersen left on these shores in the last century. The Fisherman statue becomes the male alter ego of Ericksen’s Little Mermaid in Copenhagen, creating an ideal bridge of culture and art that embellishes an enchanting location like Portobello Bay.

Leonardo Lustig, a German artist born and living in Santa Margherita Ligure, has created a symbolic work that delicately blends with the surrounding landscape, among the rocks and waves of the sea, bathed in foam and surrounded by the marine fauna whose motionless gesture he would like to capture. A splendid example of a piece of art available to tourists, enthusiasts and residents of Sestri, giving the Bay of Silence of new keys to interpretation.
